GSI Future: A Detector for Antiproton Physics

A major part of the GSI future project [1] is the possibility to open up a new research field in hadron spectroscopy and hadron properties in nuclear matter using cooled antiprotons in a High Energy Storage Ring (HESR). This machine will provide antiproton beams in a momentum range of 1.5 to 15 GeV/c with excellent beam quality. Internal targets in the ring are pellets of frozen H2 or cluster jets (pp reactions) or thin wires of heavier elements (pA reactions). The main topics are precision charmonium spectroscopy, search for hybrids and glueballs, interaction of open and hidden charm with nucleons and nuclei, and (double) hypernuclei.
